1. Monuments and works of art can create a sense of national pride and fortify national awareness. Have you ever thought about how cultural symbols such as the American flag or the Statue of Liberty, or figures of popular culture like Donald Duck or Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe” are used to define American national identity? Have you ever thought about an art piece or architecture that could define your national and/or cultural identity? Browse the web and choose one art object (preferably a painting, a sculpture, a ceramic object or architecture) that in your view represents your national identity best. Then go to the BLOGORAMA link and post your object. Explain why you chose this object.
2. Imagine being a master potter living in a potters’ village in 16th century Korea. Your kiln, which is owned by a local merchant, makes items for daily use such as food bowls and storage jars. The high-quality ceramic objects you make are expensive, only the cultural elite can afford them. As a potter, you belong to the lowest social class in Chosŏn Korean society. Some of your distant relatives migrated to Japan a few years ago, where they were well received. They now work at the kilns of Karatsu in the southernmost Japanese island of Kyushu. In the summer of 1593, your village is attacked by Japanese soldiers. They were sent by a Japanese warlord named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It turns out that the commander of these soldiers is Hata Nobutoki, the daimyō (lord) who is the owner of the kilns of Karatsu. Hata admires your skills and invites you to come and work at his kiln. He offers you warrior (samurai) status and a piece of land. You would also be allowed to take your wife and children with you. Would you stay in Korea, or rather go to Japan? If you decided to go to Japan and work at the Karatsu kilns, would you consider your work Korean or Japanese?

Our academic experts are ready and waiting to assist with any writing project you may have. From simple essay plans, through to full dissertations, you can guarantee we have a service perfectly matched to your needs.
