1a) Using the definitions in the instructor video presentation, video and readings this week, how does the Haiti earthquake aftermath (from the Frontline documentary and Katz reading) meet the definition of humanitarian crises (and emergency and disaster)? How did Katz’ “The Big Truck” work and Frontline’s earthquake coverage in Haiti provide political, societal, economic and historical context? What were the shortfalls (if any) in that work and that of other news coverage (video) provided this week? You can draw on the readings (Greenberg and Gathara) for the critiques of coverage and how it could be improved.
From your analysis of this week’s materials, discuss what you see as the strengths, challenges and historical issues with journalists and news organization coverage of humanitarian crises around the world (briefly) yet more specifically in the Haiti case.
1b) Tell us a humanitarian crisis/es that you may consider covering for the project this semester. You do not have to be married to this idea. We’ll ask this again next week.
