In the Civil War lecture, the South was utterly defeated by the North and, in many places like Atlanta, in ruins. In one way, the Black Codes signify a New South emerging from the smoldering fires of defeat to recreate society and culture.
Think about the following questions: Where would nearly 4 million freed Blacks fit into the New South? What roles would they play? Where would they live and work, and go to school? Think about these questions and other inquiries you may come up with when imagining what type of culture White leaders in the South wanted to recreate after their horrific defeat. What did these codes mean for the 4 million freed African Americans?
Then, specifically, answer this question: What type of society are these laws intended to create?
2) Then, Pick out of one the Black Codes. Examine the Code, it’s language and intent. Offer an analysis of the Code you pick out.
