POL214 Book review rubric
This is the rubric that will be used by TAs to mark final papers
• 30% of the final grade
• 8 pages double spaced
SUMMARY OF THE BOOK (approximately 40%)
• Identification and explanation of the author’s argument
• Presentation of the author’s evidence – how does the author make the argument he or she
is making?
• Summary of the author’s conclusions and implications of the study
• Presentation of course terms and concepts that the book explicitly or implicitly relies on
CRITICAL DISCUSSION AND EVALUATION (approximately 30%)
• Evaluation of the author’s argument – is it convincing?
• Evaluation of author’s evidence – is it thorough? Is something missing?
• Consideration of whether the author achieved his or her aims in the book
• Discussion of missing perspectives or oversights of the work
• Consideration of the book’s weaknesses
• Use of course terms and concepts to illuminate key arguments
• A consideration of the importance of the book to the broader understanding of Canadian
politics. How does the book contribute to an important debate in Canadian politics?
ORGANIZATION AND QUALITY OF WRITING (approximately 30%)
• Introduction and conclusion clearly present the topic and scope of the paper
• Essay sets out ideas in logical and coherent paragraph structure and clear sentence
structure
• Essay remains focused on the substance of the book throughout
• Substantive points are made concisely
• Sources are properly and consistently cited throughout the paper
• The bibliography contains all sources referenced in the paper
• Format of the bibliography is consistent with disciplinary norms
• Overall quality of language and structure is strong

review will go into more detail in the summary and critical discussion, and will also involve a

• 8-10 pages, double spaced.
• 8-10 sources (both primary and secondary)
ANALYSIS AND ARGUMENTATION (approx. 50%)
• Clearly presents the research question
• Presents a clear argument in response to the research question
• Uses detailed and specific evidence to support analysis and
argument
• Recognizes and addresses possible counterarguments to, and gaps
in evidence for, own position
• Responds convincingly to counterarguments
• Shows critical understanding of sources, including examination of
authors’ assumptions and an ability to relate sources to one another
USE OF COURSE IDEAS and CHOICE of MATERIALS (approx. 20%)
• Relates discussion to theoretically relevant concepts covered in the
course
• Uses terminology accurately and appropriately
ORGANIZATION AND QUALITY OF WRITING (approx. 30%)
