3rd Short Paper Due (3-5 pages): A strong thread links the work of Virginia Woolf early in the twentieth century to the contemporary scholar Cynthia Enloe in the twenty-first. Exploring some of the readings we have examined in the third and final unit of our course, make the case for, or against, feminist opposition to war. What arguments do writers such as Woolf and Enloe, Koikari, Oliver, and Chatelain, make against military, racist, structural violence? What lessons can we learn from their writings today, in the current moment? Feel free to use this paper as an opportunity to re-asses and re-evaluate all we have discussed over the course of the semester. If you could summarize what you have learned this semester in a series of Enloe-like “lessons,” what would those lessons be? What do you take away from this course? What are the most pressing issues facing women in contexts of war and violence today—and, more importantly, what should be done to address them? Be sure to include specific references from the texts you discuss, with proper citations.
