Confidence of two characters, one from fiction and one from nonfiction.
Desiree and Justin Torres.
The character I chose for the fiction was Desiree from “Desiree’s Baby”. Desiree had fantasies about marriage, it was a desire that made her date many different partners, even though she was married, and had a child. I felt Desiree was confident in herself and confident in her beauty, she had a way to attract men. She was also a very good mother to her baby. Desiree was so happy when she married Armand. She was confident she had changed this man whom she knew to be a very strict and cruel master. She fell for Armand when he pursued her by giving her expensive clothing. Then she ended up feeling crushed when Armand came home one day and ignored her even though she was calling his name repeatedly. Desiree finally grabs Armand’s arm and says ” look at our child. What does it mean? tell me.” (Levene 1893, 1894 p. 419). Armand told her that the child wasn’t his, and he want her to leave. Desiree shows confidence by walking away and never looking back.
Another confident character from the nonfiction section is Torres. In Torres story he displays confidence by challenging societal normals and expectations. Torres embraces the night at the Queer club as a safe place and defiance. Torres feels that in the outside world that “There’s a world that politicizes every aspect of your identity” ( Torres (2016) p. 1). He feels inside the Latin club its loud and free, free for you to be sexy. A place where you can be you, rather its being a muscled women, a butch dyke, or even genderqueers. Its a place to dance and mingle without the outside word judging you. He can just close his eyes and see everyone enjoying the club, where everyone is dancing to all different kinds of music.
