Purpose
The main question of your first debate is the following: “Is lobbying good for the U.S. democracy?” The main purposes of the debate are twofold: (1) to help you understand the policy-making actors (this week’s topic); and (2) to enable you to work cooperatively and brainstorm ideas to support an opinion.
Guidelines for the Debate
For this debate, I randomly divided the class into three groups (judges and two groups).
I am sure you all have a personal opinion on this topic. However, for the purposes of this debate, I would like you to leave those aside and defend the position of your group.
The discussion will be moderated by me, which means that I will ask the questions that will lead our debate. I do encourage each group to ask questions to one another, however. This is certainly acceptable.
The question that we will start off with is the main question of the debate, which is “Is lobbying good for the U.S. democracy?” I may ask some follow-up questions related to this overall question later on.
Research on the topic and participate in the discussion as much as possible. And please cite all the sources.
