Understand the responsibilities of an officer by makin

The Caine Mutiny
Purpose:
Understand the responsibilities of an officer by making connections to examples of
leadership attributes that are displayed in the film. Attributes such as character, presence
and intellect in addition to the concept of “Counterproductive Leadership” which is the
Army’s replacement terminology for what most of us understand as “Toxic Leadership”.
The film will be discussed in Phase II during the Counter-productive Leadership session.
Assignment:
Students will watch “The Caine Mutiny” and answer the following questions for the
Phase II Counter-productive Leadership discussion:
1. Provide two examples of what you might consider to be toxic or counter-
productive leadership in the film?
2. Do you believe Captain Queeg was productive or counter-productive? Why?
3. Why is it important to support a commanding officer, especially when they are
going through difficult times?
