My leadership purpose is build a strong team that can trust each other and communicate effectively. Purposeful leadership helps to establish employee engagement and satisfaction. We all have to work in order to provide for ourselves and for our families. Work does not have to be miserable and draining. I believe that great leadership can make any type of work enjoyable and rewarding. The strategies that I can leverage in complexity leadership to help fulfill my leadership purpose are impact, external rewards, identity reinforcement, personal development, utility, and intrinsic interest. For most people work helps us achieve our goals and aspirations. An effective work environment can help to build an employees skillsets and mindsets. It allows for personal growth. I choose to work in health in order to make an impact in the world. This is also the main reason I want to continue to work with the military health care system. External rewards are a great way to show that you appreciate and value your employees. I was recently awarded a military coin for my hard work and it showed me that my work was seen and valued (Wormington & Graham, 2024).

post 2

Building solid, unified teams that can rely on one another, communicate honestly, and cooperate to achieve common objectives is my leadership mission. To promote both individual development and group achievement, I think it’s important to have a work atmosphere where each team member feels appreciated and encouraged. This is in line with the ideas presented in Patrick M. Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, which emphasize the importance of commitment, trust, constructive conflict, responsibility, and results-oriented behavior in resolving team conflicts.

By emphasizing flexibility and giving the team the freedom to react to changing circumstances, I may use tactics from complexity leadership to achieve this goal. I can assist team members in having fruitful conversations by promoting open communication and fostering an environment where dispute is welcomed rather than shunned. The dysfunctions of lack of commitment and fear of confrontation are immediately addressed by this approach.

It’s also critical to cultivate a feeling of responsibility and shared purpose. Because complexity leadership places a strong emphasis on decentralization and flexibility, I can make sure that everyone in my team is dedicated to achieving both individual and team success by letting them take ownership of their job. This will improve overall outcomes by assisting in overcoming the avoidance of responsibility.
