- Question 1: The mosque (fig. 32) and the stupa (fig. 112) represent two very different types of devotional space. Can you describe the form of each and how they were conceived? What kinds of ritual take place at each, and how does the architectural space respond to those needs?
- Question 2: Discuss the layout of pages from illustrated manuscripts of different traditions, such as the Buddhist Prajnaparamita (fig. 230), the Jain Kalakacharyakatha (fig. 231), and the Persian-language Shahnama (fig. 39). How is the text arranged? Where are the paintings placed? What is the relationship between the content of the writing and the illustration? Do modern books contain illustrations in the same way? Can you think of any authors today who use images as part of their storytelling?
- Question 3: In the Mughal sphere, European paintings and engravings inspired artists in different ways. Compare the varied responses of the artists who created the paintings in figs. 31, 330, and 337. How are they alike or different? How do they compare to European works of the mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century? Did artists in other parts of Asia also play with artistic conventions from abroad?
