Important Themes and Concepts

Grenville Acts – a host of Acts enacted by Parliament in the mid 1760s in order to pay for the French and Indian War and the shortfall of the colonial expenditures and colonial taxes. These including the Stamp Act, Sugar Act, Currency Act, Customs Acts, Tea Act, and many others.

The Bloody Massacre – an image of the Boston Massacre that was made first by Henry Pelham, and then copied (plagiarized) by Paul Revere and printed thousands of times. In fact, this may have been the most recognizable image from the era.

Reuse of the The Bloody Massacre during the Lead up to the Civil War – this same image was updated and changed leading up to the Civil War as abolitionists wanted to lionize Crispus Attucks, while pro-slavery groups attempted to demonize him.

Trial of the British soldiers during Boston Massacre – defended by future president John Adams, the soldiers were acquitted of their crimes, continuing to push American sentiment towards war.
