  3. Essay Writing: Write an essay, answering one of the following questions in at least 300 words, structured with an introduction (including a thesis statement), body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
    • Question 1: Compare colonial-era buildings of the nineteenth century (figs. 413 and 414) to the Mughal royal buildings from which they are supposed to take inspiration (such as figs. 321 and 3-22). Do they have any features in common? Do you see a connection between them?
    • Question 2: Tyeb Mehta and several of his contemporaries acknowledged the inspiration they took from New York artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Do you see connections between Indian and American painting of this period? Can you think of any twentieth-century artists in Europe or America who looked to Asian art to create their own works?
    • Question 3: Soon after its invention, photography was put to use in documenting wars in many parts of the world. Compare the images of the Indian Uprising of 1857 captured by Felice Beato (fig. 412) with the photographs from near-contemporary conflicts such as the American Civil War, photographed by Mathew Brady, or the Crimean War, photographed by Roger Fenton. What aspects of conflict do they focus on? How do these photographs compare to images being shot of war today?
