I agree that self-driving cars should have a consequential system designed to protect or cause the least amount of harm possible to humans. Having a machine correctly add these consequences up every time and getting the correct answer every time. Should make you feel comfortable that this system works for humanity.
Alive, and mobility, and hostile are some of the values the system recognizes. The system prioritizes living humans and is able to take into account the mobility of living things. If driverless vehicles become the normal, a system must be put in place to protect humans. Getting to a point where objectives are increasing human life, being able to preserve the most humans is the best choice. When a hostile human comes across these driverless machines, the driver will not actively steer toward the hostile human but will still try to move out of the way. But if hitting the hostile human results in helping other people then it is allowed to choose that action.
