Midterm Project: Materials in the News
Individual project for the online course
Project Task:
Conduct extensive research on a building construction material that made or is making
headlines. The construction-related material you choose may be chosen because it is
new and innovative or it may have been part of a construction system that experienced a
failure in a building application. You can utilize any research medium of your choice:
textbook, internet, periodicals (online or print), Sweets Catalog Online
(sweets.construction.com), HCC online libraries: (https://libguides.hccfl.edu/hcclibraries).
Find a material that has a wealth of information to research, discuss and document.
Project Choices: (Note: You have a choice of the type of material to research.)
1. New/Innovative / “Green” Material:
• Information about the material: how it is utilized?
• Information regarding material strengths and weaknesses?
• If it is considered “green” or sustainable, explain the characteristics that make
it that way: thermal resistance, energy – efficiency, recycled content or
recyclability?
• Material cost analysis – compare it with similar non-green material for example.
• Provide graphic examples (pictures, diagrams) of how it is used in building
applications.
2. Construction Material Failure:
• Information about the building or structure where the material was utilized
• Information about the material: how it is utilized?
• Information regarding material strengths and weaknesses?
• Explain the circumstances of the material failure.
• Explain how the problem was ultimately resolved or remedied.
• Provide graphic examples (pictures, diagrams) that help explain the failure.
Project Format Requirements:
1. The project will be presented as a Power point presentation.
2. Include a minimum of (5) Power point slides (excluding Works Cited page).
3. Include a cover page with the following: project title, your name, class information
and date of submittal at the beginning of your Power point. Use material – related
graphics on the cover page as well.
4. Include a type-written overview of the information for the material. This must be in
the standard essay style with an introductory paragraph, supporting paragraphs
following and a conclusion paragraph. In the initial paragraph, discuss what
attracted you to the particular material chosen.
5. Include photographs and other graphics to reinforce your discussion.
6. Cite all references for text and graphics used in the works cited page slide.
Project Grading Criteria:
