Students will visit a gallery and a museum to engage with staff, view the exhibitions, and to observe what is happening in each space (how each space is “coded” socially). Note how the work is installed, the textual references, and record overall experience. In a written report, compare how art is “valued” in a gallery setting with the museum: what’s similar? What is distinctive? And how do writers like Velthuis help “decode” the cultural codes? 8-10 pages
I chose Hauser & Wirth at 22nd st and the Brooklyn Museum as my two examples.
