This essay functions as a personal as well as academic analysis of two pieces of writing that share a common theme. Not only will you provide your own interpretation of two texts, but you will support your ideas through outside research.
The purpose of this essay is to develop:

-close and critical reading
-ability to interpret and recognize social, political, historical, and cultural contexts
-research skills by using the library database to search for the background information on the issue/theme
-ability to use/connect sources and put them into conversation

There are two types of sources that are required for the essay 2:
Scholarly article(s) should be used to develop the common theme that the two texts are sharing. You will need to point out at least one of three things before you cite your scholarly article to properly connect and incorporate the source to your argument or main idea:
-identifying its main argument,
-providing its central question/problem, and
-pointing out its exigency (what’s its significance and for whom it is relevant).
Two readings for literary analysis. You will need to summarize the texts before analyzing them.
Focus on the following questions:
What does the author try to portray?
How effective is the author? What’s the purpose of the text?
How does the style of writing help communicate the message?
What literary techniques are used in the text? Why?
What main issue(s) does the author bring up in the text?
What is the historical/social/cultural significance of the text?
How does (or through what descriiptions/relationship/family dynamic/etc.) does the author try to portray the social/cultural/historical issues?
You are analyzing the text more rather than what is in the text.
EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS
(My 2 readings are “ Headstrong historian“ and “girl”) and (the outside scholarly research article is “ Unspeakable Mother: The Politics of Reclaiming the Maternal Pre-Text and Origin in Jamaica Kincaid’s The Autobiography of My Mother “
MY PROFESSOR TOLD ME TO focus more on the feminism and mother daughter relationship which is tight and think due to the very tight connection to the culture and social constraints. Tue specificity here is also women of color too (why are they so connected?) <——— this is for the “girl” portion For the “headstrong historian” she said to you need to see how my theme can be supported by Headstrong Historian. She would ask me to think here about why the mother was able to connect with her granddaughter (but her own son and not her grandson). Maybe you can ponder on that a bit.
