A College Students “Interprets” Revelation.

Step 1. Read the short story The Apocalypse Commentary of Bob Paisner by Rick Moody (see Readings page in this module). As you read, take notes about how the story uses Revelation, and think about how this story relates to the presentations of the two previous modules on this biblical text. You will probably need to read the story at least twice to take notes and get examples to interpret the story.

Step 2. Write a formal paper that evaluates Bob Paisner’s (the short story protagonists) interpretation of the Book of Revelation.

Format, Content, & Structure of Paper

Format: Word document, 12-pt Times New Roman, double-spaced; include your name and paper title

Minimum word count: 1000 words

Your paper should be structured as follows:

  • Summary of plot: 300 words (maximum). Begin by summarizing the story’s plot for a MAXIMUM of 300 words. This summary should not be a recap of the plot. Instead, it should identify the following: the setting of the events in the story, Bobs motivations for writing the commentary, the principal characters of the story, Bobs sources for his interpretation, and the structure of the narrative.
  • Evaluation of Bobs understanding and use of Revelation: 300 words (minimum). The next section of your paper should critique and evaluate Bobs use of Revelation. What aspects of Revelation does Bob appear to understand correctly? What does he appear to misunderstand? Be sure to do both, and in both cases provide specific examples of Bobs understanding or misunderstanding, and explain possible reasons for his accurate or inaccurate interpretation of these aspects. Please note: You are not evaluating Bob as a fictional character, but Bob’s understanding/use of Revelation.
  • Evaluation of the omissions in Bobs commentary: 300 words (minimum). What important parts of Revelation did Bob leave out in his interpretation, and what should he have included? Identify specific parts of Revelation that Bob should have included in his interpretation, yet omitted. What is missing that you think is important? Give at least two examples of particular aspects or symbols or parts or events that you think are important to Revelation and apocalyptic expectations, but that Bob fails to discuss in his commentary. Why do you think he should have included them?
  • Conclusion: 100 words (maximum). Conclude your paper with a brief summary of your analysis. Note: Do not summarize the story but emphasize the key takeaways of your ANALYSIS of the story. Be sure to address this final question: By creating the fictional Bob and his commentary, what do you think the author of the story (Rick Moody) is saying about how people interpret Revelation?
