“A community health assessment is a systematic process involving the community to identify and analyze community health needs and assets in order to prioritize these needs, and to plan and act upon significant unmet community health needs” (Catholic Health Association of the United States, 2015). Involving the community is a central component of the CHA process and benefits both the members of a community as well as the agencies and organizations who serve the community (AHA Community Health Improvement, n.d.). Community engagement occurs in numerous ways, across a spectrum of involvement and participation efforts. Obviously, fostering relationships and partnerships involves time and effort from all involved parties but it can have a positive and quality impact on the CHA and the entire community.
In addition to community engagement, your CHA should include a wide range of stakeholders from the community, including patients, volunteers, organization staff and leadership, organizations that serve communities and populations impacted by a public health problem, and those populations and their representatives experiencing the public health issue. In all reality, any business, organization, or individual in the community is a potential partner to consider in your CHA.
In this first SPP draft submission, you will consider the first three steps of the Community Health Assessment Toolkit as presented by AHA Community Health Improvement. In addition to identifying a public health problem, you will describe the community and stakeholders as well as community engagement. You will explore the ethical and cultural issues involved with recruitment and participant engagement as well as the benefits to participants.

Describe the types of health workers and other community stakeholders who might participate in the assessment.
Explain how the community will participate in your assessment.
Describe any ethical or cultural considerations that might arise when recruiting and engaging with participants in your CHA.
