PAPER 2 PROMPT IAH 203 (Spring 2018), sections 10-15
Instructions: Select one of the questions listed below, and compose an argumentative essay of 5 to 7 pages in length. Papers should be typed in double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font, with left and right margins of at least 1 inch. Number your pages, and include your name on the first page. Your essay should include all of the following:
• A THESIS, stated clearly in your introduction.
• TOPIC SENTENCES at the beginning of every paragraph in the body of your essay.
• SUPPORTING EVIDENCE drawn from Kincaid’s A Small Place and Katz’s The Big Truck. Direct quotes should be kept very short; it is preferable to paraphrase the text in your own words, just citing the page. Citations should be as follows: (Katz, 297). Or (Kincaid, 41). Where appropriate, papers may also draw on materials covered during lectures.
Question 1: In A Small Place, Kincaid portrays tourism as an unequal relationship that often echoes colonial-era racism and exploitation. To what extent are her arguments applicable to recent foreign aid projects in Haiti, as discussed in Katz’s Big Truck? Why is international humanitarian aid sometimes characterized as an “industry,” and how do recent developments in Haiti illustrate its limited impact for most Haitians? What benefits do donor countries and nongovernmental organizations derive from their participation in such foreign aid projects?
Question 2: A Small Place and Big Truck provide many examples of politicians who used their offices and campaigns to accrue personal wealth, or who acted on behalf of business interests (in exchange for political support or other favors) without informing voters and taxpayers. At the same time, accusations of “corruption” have often been an excuse for foreign governments and organizations to keep power out of the hands of Caribbean peoples. Do Kincaid’s and Katz’s portrayals of corruption differ from one another, or are they complementary? In what ways has the abuse of political power in the Caribbean been fueled or facilitated from the outside?
Essays must be uploaded to D2L before scheduled recitation time on Thursday, April 12
