A SOAP is a rhetorical guide that helps the writer to grasp the precise nature of a writing assignment. For this assignment, your SOAP can be broken down as follows:
Subject = Storytelling and our course theme
Occasion = A paper that allows you to introduce yourself and experiment with a visual way of telling a story.
Audience = Your instructor
Purpose = The purpose is to analyze/reflect
Due Date: September 23
This assignment should be at least three to four pages typed (double-spaced) in its final form. 12-point Times New Roman font should be used and inches should not exceed 1-inch on any side.
Your task: Write a paper that provides an introduction to yourself and provides a reflection on how you connect/identify with the course theme: The Power of Storytelling: Narratives of Past, Present, and Future.
Please use the following guidelines to write your paper:
Begin with a strong introduction. In the introduction, you should begin by introducing yourself (include details like your name, major, hometown, etc.).
The body of your essay should delve into the following areas:
What you have learned about the concept of storytelling, its origins, and early forms– you can use any of the talks or articles posted in Week 1 or Week 2.
Please be sure to cite your sources as best you can in APA style. If you are not sure how to do this, don’t worry (I just want to see where your citation skills are at this point).
Using the Icons feature in Word, select a series of icons and arrange them in rows as part of your assignment. The icons should convey a simple, brief story (one or two sentences). BELOW your icons, on the following page, tell us what the story is using sentences and paragraphs. Then, explain what it was like to try to communicate an idea/story with just pictures. Does it make you appreciate early storytelling more? Why or why not?
End with a conclusion that summarizes what I should have learned about you. Also reflect on what you think about our course theme— The Power of Storytelling: Narratives of Past, Present, and Future.
Remember: Websites like Wikipedia.org, eNotes.com, etc. are not considered academic sources for this assignment. It is permissible to use the first person in this paper.
Please implement APA style in-text citations and create a References page, using APA style.
Your paper should have:
A proper title page as page 1
The essay will begin on page 2 and you will have the following major headings:
Introduction: begin the essay with information about yourself. What are your initial thoughts about the course theme? What will the reader learn about as they continue reading your paper (this is the thesis).
Understanding Storytelling: Tell me what you have learned about the concept of resilience
My Cave Art: Insert your icons, give your full story, and respond to above reflection questions.
Conclusion: Summarize your paper. What should the reader have taken away? How has writing this enhanced your understanding of our course theme?
