In Kate Chopin’s fictional story “Desiree’s Baby”, I have chosen Madam Valmounde as a character that displayed confidence. This is demonstrated by confidently taking charge of her own destiny. Since Madam Valmounde had no biological children of her own, the decision to take in and raise Desiree as her own daughter (After the discovery of Desiree wandering at the edge of Madam Valmounde’s husband’s property”, that moment took a tremendous amount of confidence. This is supported by the author writing , “Valmondé abandoned every speculation but the one that Désirée had been sent to her by a beneficent Providence to be the child of her affection.”
When Desiree gives birth to a son years later, Madam Valmounde stays confidently firm on her decision to not accept him as her grandson because of the color of his skin. This demonstration led to Desiree’s mysterious true identity and an unexpected plot twist.
On the other hand, Justin Torres in his biography called “In praise of Latin Nights at the Queer Club”, displayed courage by shedding a light on how Latin Night at the Queer Club helped him feel safe to be his true self. This is supported by the statement, “… fact remains that a sense of safety transforms the body, transforms the spirit. So many of us walk through the world without it.”
So while in “Desiree Baby”, Madame Valmounde raises Desiree in safety, it is evident that only during Latin nights at the queer club did Justin feel safe. He successfully confidently expressed that feeling of acceptance in the above quote. In the “outside” he expressed how himself or others lack confidence along with other positive identity characteristics. “Outside, there’s a world that politicizes every aspect of your identity.”
We can conclude that both Madam Valmounde and Justin Torres both exhibited confidence in their own way that impacted their future.
