SPEECH OF INTRODUCTION Amelia Bloomer
Amelia Jenks Bloomer, an editor, and writer advocating for women’s rights and temperance is known as a promoter of dress reform. “Bloomers” are named for her reform efforts. She lived from May 27, 1818, to December 30, 1894.
WHAT’S A SPEECH OF INTRODUCTION? Warmly introduces an invited guest speaker, usually a notable person, to the audience. The speech should build positive excitement for the speaker by sharing a couple of facts (e.g. achievements, anecdotes, etc.) which will be particularly interesting for the audience.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT: You will give a “Speech of Introduction” for a notable person you admire (living or dead). Your job is to research the subject, prepare an extemporaneous speech in a live, public setting. In this case, a virtual Zoom meeting.
After you research your subject, spend some time going through your notes. Highlight things you think the audience will find most compelling, entertaining, or meaningful. Also consider what you think your subject might like you to say about them. If both of these things match, then that’s a pretty good sign that it should go into your speech.
