Analysis of current ransomware trends, characteristics and detection models
Ransomware is an extensively publicized, extremely sophisticated and destructive form of malware that affects both individuals and organizations alike. While it may seem that ransomware is a fairly new form of malware, in actuality it has been around for almost three decades. The very first ransomware was known as the AIDS and was written and released by Dr. Joseph L. Popp., an evolutionary biologist from Harvard. As with modern ransomware it was designed to encrypt the files on a victim’s computer and then demand a ransom to restore access to them. Since this first iteration, ransomware has continued to evolve growing more and more sophisticated and destructive with each new iteration.
