ASSESSMENT 1 – PROJECT SCENARIO
You have been working for a couple of years at QS3309 & Associates Pty Limited, a client-side
Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) firm based in the local area.
The Managing Director (MD) of QS3309 & Associates Pty Limited, Dr Andrew Quentin-Smith
(known affectionately as AQS to the staff) is very happy with the way you have been
progressing.
Your MD has come to you with an opportunity to step up and become the primary contact
for a new client.
Mr. Santos Clawes has had his incumbent Quantity Surveyor pull out of a project last minute
and left him high and dry. This is therefore your chance to ride in and be his knight in shining
armor.
Following a meeting with your MD, Mr. Clawes has requested you complete a “quick” take-
off for the project that is starting imminently.
Your MD has provided you with the email below outlining what was agreed at their meeting.

Good afternoon Andrew,
As discussed this morning, I am keen for you to get your up-and-coming QS to complete a quick
exercise for me. Your desсrіption of them has instilled me with confidence, so I am keen to see just
what they can do. As discussed and agreed I will require the following:-
Purpose I need the earthworks quantities for my project as soon as possible so I can send
them to my Civil contractor for pricing. Due to the time constraints, I am happy to
provide the current BOQ (which I have attached to this email), however I cannot
guarantee its completeness or accuracy. Please have your QS review this and mark
up in red any required changes to the items and/or desсrіptions and add the relevant
quantities. My Civil contractor has asked for the industry standard “Mudshark”
software package to be used so that they can review the scope prior to signing the
contract. This will also allow us to utilise the 3D views for marketing to our end clients.
Information While the information to date is somewhat limited, it will be sufficient for our current
requirements. As such I have attached the following for your information and use:-
1) A site survey;
2) Geotechnical bore logs and test pit data;
3) Proposed Site plan;
4) Typical retaining wall and slab detail; and
5) The current (and possibly flawed) Ground Works BOQ

If there is any additional information required/you have any queries, I would request
that you utilise our preferred document management system “Canvas” and include
your request within the nominated ‘Request for Information’ (RFI) section.
Deliverables In relation to the deliverables, I will require the following:
1) Marked up BOQ including any amendments required to the BOQ wording/format
and Quantities for all of the relevant earthworks items. I am unsure as to how well
the previous QS prepared the provided BOQ, so I am relying on your team to
make sure it is correct. If possible, it would also be good to know if there is a way
of reducing the offsite disposal/importing of material in order to keep costs down. I
am not sure if the designer has done this very well.
2) Support calculations for all quantities provided. I note this may seem over the top,
however as we are just developing this relationship I wish to see if your staff are
as good as you say.
3) A copy of the .bbx MudShark file so I can provide it to my Civil contractor.
Deadline As you are aware, time is money in construction and having sold the industrial unit off
the plan, I have a deadline to meet. As agreed, you will have your completed BOQ
and support documentation to me by 5pm Sunday 31 st March 2024 otherwise the
presales contract will expire and the whole project will be in jeopardy.

× How can I help you?
