A Changing Society
In Chapters 18 and 19 of History of Modern Art, you will learn about many different art movements that responded to the changing society that followed World War II, such as Noveau Ralisme, Fluxus, the Situationists, and Pop art. Many artists from the early 1960s embraced experimentation by pioneering new materials (like Yves Klein, pictured above), and by radically rethinking how art creates meaning and what it ,eans to be an “artist”.
In this week’s discussion forum, you will choose a work of art by an artist covered in this week’s reading and analyze its relationship to society and its audience, which includes you!
Please consider the following questions:
- How did the artist express their unique point of view?
- Did their work involve performance or unusual materials?
- How do these materials or methods contribute to the meaning of the piece?
- How do you think the artist wanted the audience or viewer of the artwork to respond?
- As a viewer, how does it make you feel?
