Course Description:    This course is an introduction to the basic methods and concepts of psychology, focusing on theories and research findings.  We will consider the historical development of this field and overview a variety of psychological approaches to understanding behavior including biological, evolutionary, developmental, cognitive, psychodynamic and social models.  We will cover research findings and theoretical developments in the areas of learning and memory, personality and personality disorders, social behavior, sensation and perception, language and intelligence, and other related fields.  Students will learn to think critically about how the field of psychology applies to the understanding of human diversity.  Students will develop towards becoming smart consumers of psychological information and become familiar with some enduring debates in the field including issues such as the relationship between mind and body and the interaction of nature and nurture in determining mental and behavioral change.
 
GE / ILO Student Learning Outcomes:  Introduction to Psychology fulfills the Social Sciences (SS) General Education requirement at Dominican University.  As such, this course is designed to meet the following objectives:
 
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
1) effectively communicate an understanding of the method(s) used in psychology;
 
2)  articulate at least three theories used to understand human behavior used in psychology;
 
3) recognize themselves as citizens of diverse communities.
 
Course Student Learning Outcomes:    As an introduction to the field of psychology, this course is designed to meet the following objectives:
 
Students should be able to demonstrate through papers and exams:
 
1) comprehension of psychology as a broad field of study and the ability to identify the major subdivisions in the field as they facilitate our understanding of human behavior, cooperation and conflict in human relationships.
 
2) understanding of the main theories and concepts in Psychology, such as the biological perspective, the psycho-social theories, and the scientific method.
 
3) understanding of the development of the field of psychology, and the relationship between psychology and other approaches to understanding the human being.
 
4) awareness of diversity issues and topics within psychology
 
5)  an increased understanding of the self and others, and how the self functions in an interdependent world.
 
Grading: grades will be based on 3 exams, 2 papers and short in class and take home assignments and quizzes.
 
Exams (75%): There will be three exams during the semester. Each will 1 hour long, non-cumulative (each test will cover only material since the previous test) and composed of 50 multiple choice questions.  The exams will be in various formats – one will be open book and notes (no cell phones, tablets or laptops allowed) and in-class, one will be open book and notes and on-line, and one will be closed book and notes but you will be allowed an 8 1/2 X 11 double-sided “cheat sheet”.  The purpose for using various testing methods is to see if one testing method is more effective than the other.  Dates of the exams, the style of the exam, and the material each exam covers is provided in the class schedule below.  Each exam is worth 25% of your final grade for a total of 75%.
 
Papers (20%): There will be two papers in this course – All papers MUST be turned in by the start of class on the date due in two forms:  a hard copy MUST be turned in in class or to the psychology department (27 Bertrand) – emailed papers will not be accepted.  A second electronic copy (in WORD format) MUST be turned in (by the day the assignment is due) on Moodle.  This copy will be checked for plagiarism.  Papers will lose 1/2 grade for each day they are late.

Paper 2:  (10%) Your second paper assignment in this course is meant to accomplish three objectives – 1) to allow you to investigate an area of psychology of interest to you in more depth, 2) introduce you to cross cultural ideas and findings in psychology and 3) to expose you to the scientific research in the field of psychology.  As psychology as a scientific field is driven by research, it is important for students to become familiar with finding and reading primary research articles.  Your second paper is based on the book Crazy Like Us by Watters.  That book describes four different psychological disorders – Anorexia, PTSD, Schizophrenia and Depression – in a global and cross-cultural context.  For your paper, please pick any one of the four disorders described in this book, read the sections in the Schacter et al text that are relevant to get some background, and then find at least two full text (you cannot just read the abstracts) research articles that report the results of a study investigating that disorder.  At least one of the two articles must be about research done on that disorder in a country other than the U.S.  You can use psychinfo, sciencedirect, medline or any of the other search engines available through the library to find your articles (psychinfo is what I recommend), as well as the sources cited in the Schacter text or even in the Watters book itself.  Be sure that the articles you find are research articles (as described in class), not news articles or reviews (cite all your sources).
After reading the articles, write a short (5 page minimum, typed, double spaced, 10 – 12 point font and 1 inch margins, with APA citations) paper discussing the general topic area using information from Watters and the Schacter text (that is, describe the disorder and its symptoms, what is known about its underlying causes and treatments), and summarizing and comparing the two articles, including a discussion of the role of culture in understanding and treating the disorder.  This paper will be worth 10% of your final grade, due at the start of the final exam (please start on this task early, since some journal articles may take a while to find).
 
Homework assignments and quizzes (5%):  There will be short homework assignments based on the readings in Schacter et al, as well as occasional in class quizzes that will together count for 5% of your final grade.  Also as part of this 5%, students will attend the campus academic conference on April 20 and complete a brief writing assignment based on their experience. While attendance will not be graded, missed quizzes cannot be made up and homework assignments picked up or turned in late lose significant points.
 
Extra credit / make-up exams: Except for emergencies, I do not offer make-ups or extra credit.  Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss alternatives if you know you will be absent.  It is the students responsibility to make arrangements to make up missed work.

Grading criteria: As outlined in the Dominican University catalog, all course work will be graded on the following criteria: an A indicates excellent work, a B reflects better than average work, a C indicates average performance, D is reflective of below average work and an F indicates a failure to demonstrate adequate mastery of course material.
 
Loss of seat policy:  If you are a registered student in this class whose name is on the course roster and you miss the first class and not notify me about your intent to attend by the second meeting, your seat in the course may be given to another student.
