As part of the enrollment appeal process for the Rasmussen College Graduate Studies programs, you will submit a personal statement in the form of a written essay. This essay will provide evidence of your ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner, including language, grammar and expression of ideas. Attention will also be placed on formatting requirements.
The essay must address the following three elements:
• Please share some details regarding the factors that attributed to the grade point average (GPA) you earned in your Bachelor’s program and what will be different as you pursue your graduate degree.
• Please describe how you plan to approach your graduate studies experience to ensure that you maintain a status of good academic standing.
• Please discuss your short and long-term professional goals that motivate you to earn a graduate degree.
Structure:
• Title page with essay title, applicant’s name, graduate program applying to, and submission date.
• Include an introduction, body and conclusion in your essay.
• Maximum of 750 words
Essay format:
• Double-spaced pages (8.5 x 11) with one-inch margins.
• Times New Roman 12 point font.
• Submit as a Microsoft Word document to your Program Manager.
Your essay will be evaluated individually by a committee of:
• Department Dean or Program Director
• Department Chair or Faculty Member
• Dean of Graduate Education
Scoring:
Individual total rubric scores from committee members will be averaged to determine a final essay score. A minimum score of 14 points (78%) is required for an enrollment appeal to be granted. Essays will be scored within five business days of submission.

Integration of the Three Required Elements Provides a descriptive summary for the three required elements in the instructions as well as all required details within each of the three elements. Provides a descriptive summary for all three required elements but is missing information for one to two of the details required within the three elements. Does not provide a descriptive summary for all three required elements and/or is missing information for three or more of the required details within the three elements.
Development of Concepts Concepts are clearly developed and provide thorough explanations. Concepts are introduced but lack thorough explanations.
Concepts are rudimentary with limited explanations.
Language and
Expression of Style Exhibits professional writing style to demonstrate clear and effective communication. Language and writing style do not consistently demonstrate clear and effective communication throughout the essay. Use of language and expression of style is unclear and ineffective.
Grammar,
Spelling and
Mechanics Writing represents consistent command of grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation. No more than one error present. Writing reflects understanding of grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Contains two to three errors. Writing reflects four or more errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
Formatting
Follows all established formatting requirements. One to two errors noted in formatting. More than two errors noted in formatting
