As we have emphasized this semester, Shakespeare’s audience went to hear a play, not to see it. Even today the best Shakespearean actors make the audience see with their ears and not just with their eyes. To do this the actors must remember, as RSC voice coach Andrew Wade reminds us, that “The language is the leading character.”
Examine one aspect of how Shakespeare uses language in THE WINTER’S TALE and Hamlet. The specific topic is up to you. Some aspects of language you might consider are listed below. You are free to think of other approaches. Just be sure that whatever aspect of language you choose to analyze occurs in more than one play, either in a similar or a contrasting way. As always, be sure to introduce your approach in the opening paragraph with a strong assertion about your central idea, and indicate that central idea in a real title. Remember, the task is not simply to LIST examples of Shakespeare’s use of language but to ANALYZE how thought, motivation, action are created through those words, how “the character is in the characters” on the page.
Some possible topics:
the language of sexual disgust
the language and/or silence of female characters
the use of animal imagery
the power of antithesis
images of the theater
the power of curses
language misunderstood.
