Description: For this assignment, you will first need to choose a problem you want to write about in your ESSAY# 3.  Having identified the problem, search for articles which describe both the problem and give solutions to the problem. The Annotated Bibliography should include 3   sources in support of your problem and may include both historical and current book and article sources.  Source citations should follow APA style guidelines and annotations (approximately 300-400 words each) should include elements of summary/synthesis, assessment/analysis, and reflection/application. Questions that may help guide annotating include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.

For more help, see our handout on paraphrasing sources.

  • Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?

For more help, see our handouts on evaluating resources.

  • Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your essay. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your solutions? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic? Did it give you some ideas in terms of solutions? Are there any examples that you could use as a supporting sentence or a detailed example.

Grading: The Annotated Bibliography accounts for 10% of your final course grade and will be evaluated on support of ESSAY # 3. Polished and organized writing is a mandatory (Suggestion: attend Writing Center tutoring sessions).

Deadline: The Annotated Bibliography (Topic for the Essay# 3 + 3 completed annotations) is due in the corresponding D2L dropbox by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, March, 29.

Note: The entries you are going to annotate must be included in your references list.
