Assignment Steps with Detailed Instructions
Step 1:
Pick a health topic of interest related to risk factors. For example, you might be interested in understanding the risk factors for developing diabetes among Native American individuals in the U.S. Using the power of the internet, search various sources, including peer-reviewed sources (e.g., academic research articles) and government/organizational websites (e.g., CDC, World Health Organization, American Public Health Association website, etc.). As you search, look for information related to epidemiology statistics (e.g., prevalence, incidence, rates, etc.). Choose one source that effectively communicates the epidemiology and risk factors of the health topic you have selected.
Save the source (e.g., copy the link or download the source) and post it as part of your original post (0.5 point).
Next, describe/summarize the health communication piece you found. Be sure to discuss it using the terms you learned, such as prevalence, incidence, rate, odds ratio, relative risk, etc. (2 points)
Now, applying your understanding of structural and social determinants of health (SSDOH) from Unit 1, identify and discuss at least one SSDOH related to the health topic you selected. (1.5 points).
Your post must be organized, written in a well-structured paragraph, and free from grammatical errors. Your original post MUST be a MINIMUM of 150 words.
For example, let’s say you find this CDC Vital Signs resource related to type 2 diabetes among the Native American population in the U.SLinks to an external site.. This resource presents important findings about the prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes and its associated risk factors and health consequences. Through this source, you learn that Native American individuals are twice as likely as White American individuals to have diabetes and that diabetes incidence is strongly associated with kidney failure among Native American individuals. Based on your understanding of structural and social determinants of health, you might discuss how poverty as a structural issue shapes the observed prevalence rates and associated risk factors for developing diabetes among Native American individuals in the U.S. You might then, for example, provide insight on how poverty impedes access to the resources necessary for achieving and maintaining good health and what that means for the topic of diabetes and its risk factors like obesity.
