We tend to think of literacy as reading and writing, but in current scholarship, the definition of literacy has been expanded to incorporate the learning of basically anything, from another language to learning how to use a computer. Many of you were asked to write a literacy narrative for 1101. Think back about the topic you chose for that project. Did it involve any aspect of community?
A good working definition of literacy might look like this: “Literacy is a process situated in sociocultural contexts defined by members of a group through their actions with, through and about language” (Cairney 8).
Whether being accused of ruining economies or expediting the death of decaying industries and institutions like golf and marriage, millennials are constantly being criticized for doing it all wrong. One of such accusations is creating a communication gap caused by our hypothetical inability to properly articulate and convey ideas, especially to older generations. Even though the existence of a right or wrong way in regards to speech is contentious and arguable, phenomena like vocal fry (Talking with a rising tone), usage of slang, oversharing, repetition of redundant word, etc., seem like viable contributors to the problem.
- For this project I would like you to investigate a literacy practice unique to a community (How Millennials talk). Your task for this project will be to first identify the literacy practice in the community (vocal fry (Talking with a rising tone), usage of slang, oversharing, repetition of redundant words, etc.)
- Then you will compose a 1000-word essay that documents this community and their literacy practice. You will then compare your experience of literacy practices with what is known about it. At the end of your paper, you will offer a short argument, supported with a couple of secondary sources about why these literacy practices have evolved within the community. Your essay should include a clear introduction to the topic, a thesis statement that guides the body of the paper, a body that contains the data you collected and your evaluation of it, and a conclusion.
