Case Studies/Precedent Analysis – You must find a minimum of two (2) case studies (also referred to as “Precedent Analyses”) relevant to this project type (workplace design). You can (and frankly, probably should find) more than 2 articles as you seek to ground yourself in this new project type. What are “best practices” in a post-covid workplace for your client’s industry? How does workplace design impact recruitment & retention? What kind of furniture and amenity spaces are we seeing in 2022 and into the future? As technology changes, how is that impacting the workplace? Sustainability? Health and other kinds of well-being in the workplace “best practices” and design examples?
Remember that a case study is an intensive analysis of an individual project (that is similar to yours in some way) from which generalized understanding or insight relative to the current project can be understood. You should read articles, look at floorplans and pictures of BUILT workplaces and take note of what the designers did and why. In addition to documenting the SOURCE of your information using proper APA format, you should summarize the key findings (the things that will help you generate your design proposal) and/or include images that reflect these design take-aways. Look for and call out things that might help YOU design your project – don’t just rewrite the original article (that’s plagiarism!!!!!). See also Botti-Slitsky for Precedent examples.
