According to a number of reports, soil degradation/erosion affects 38% of the world’s cropland (~ 5 billion acres). Putting that into perspective, that represents about 15% of the Earth’s total land area or an area larger than the United States and Mexico combined.
We tend to think of soil as a renewable resource – one that is constantly being replenished by decaying matter. But worldwide trends are showing that soil erosion rates are exceeding the rate of replenishment.
The United States is losing soil 10 times faster — China and India 30 to 40 times faster — than the natural replenishment rate.
It takes approximately 500 years to replace 1 inch of topsoil lost to erosion. The minimal soil depth for agricultural production is 6 inches.

If you want to watch it (not required) I have also posted the full video.

I want you to focus your discussion post on the impact of soil degradation/erosion as it relates to agriculture production both current and future.
Think about how this issue is impacting the cost and access to products–positive and negative.
Also, how have shifts in agriculture trends–past and present–caused some of the effects
We are experiencing world-wide a shift from small scale to large scale agriculture as well as a shift from rural populations to more urban populations.
How do we manage this in context to a growing population? As of right now, the World population is ~7.7 billion. By the year 2050, it is expected to be ~10 billion and growing to 11-12 billion by 2100.

To complete these assignments, you will need to write a ½ page summary of your article as well as your opinion of the issue and how it relates to class. You may use any reputable source of news but on your uploaded/submitted HW please include the title of the article and what journal or source published the article. The summary must be written in your own words to get credit. The format is open to any method that is easiest for you, but please include the title, source, your summary & opinion.
In addition to newspapers and scientific journals, some common places to find ocean-based news are:
Nature – Oceans, Science Daily, Underwater Times, just to name a few.
Some of the latest events that you may want to research and find articles about are listed below. However, you can use any article related to oceanography you can find.
•Do Ocean Preserves actually work?
•Plan to open coastal waters to oil and gas exploration?
•San Elijo lagoon restoration.
•Trestles Toll Road
•Increase of Great White Shark activity off Cape Cod

Groundwater Concept Sketch
You’ve been asked to give a 5-minute presentation to the county commissioners on the two
issues involving groundwater and cones of depression. The issues are 1) the danger of
wells surrounding urban, agricultural, and other heavy pumping areas going dry and 2) the
danger of saltwater intrusion in coastal areas. Both are serious issues in FL.
Because you have so little time you need to design a single page handout that will get the
main ideas across to the county commissioners. You’ve been given two base drawings (one
on this page one on the next) that you may or may not use. If you would like to design your
own graphics feel free. Combine these drawings with the information from your book or
other sources to make an effective hand out explaining the issues to the county
commissioners.
Your sketch should also include citations telling the reader where you got your
information.

Integrating STEAM into Infant/Toddler Curriculum The objective of this assignmen

Integrating STEAM into Infant/Toddler Curriculum
The objective of this assignment is for the advanced preservice teacher to be able to design appropriate STEAM activities for infants and toddler. This assignment is divided into two parts: a) Design four STEAM lesson plans for infants/toddlers, b) create a mind map for one of the lesson/activity plans to share on Peergrade
Part One: Lesson Plans – 24 points
Write-up four lesson plans (use the infant/toddler lesson plan attached to this assignment) that are not explicitly found in your STEAM text using the following science disciplines:
● Biology
● Earth Science
● Physics
● Chemistry
There will be a total of 4 lesson plans/activities when Part One is completed. Submit the four lesson plans into Brightspace. Each lesson/activity plan is worth 8 points. You can submit all four merged into one document if preferred.
Part Two: Mind Map – 16 points
Select one of the four lesson plans and create a visual representation in a mind map.
The mind map visually displays the major concepts from the selected lesson plan. For many of you (if not all), mind mapping is new – but you know about curricular webbing – mind mapping is webbing using technology. The emphasis is on designing a creative, visual map of major connections found in the lesson plan.
In your Mind Map include the following:
● Name of activity and age span
● Infant/Toddler Standards
● Learning Goals (science and non science)
● Connections to STEAM
● Connections to Inquiry
● Documentation/Assessment
After creating the final version of the mind map web, save the mindmap as a pdf or png to submit into Brightspace. Each of you will share your mind map on Peergrade for peer comments on September 24. Peer comments must be posted by September 28. The entire assignment is due on October 3.
About Mind Maps
What are Mind Maps? For those of you who are familiar with curriculum webbing, the concept will be familiar. Think of mind maps as webbing for adults that uses visual content to explore concepts.
Here are two videos that will introduce you to the concept of mind mapping:
How to Mind Map with Tony Buzan
How to Create a Mind Map in 4 Steps
Coggle is a frequently used mind map software for beginners – students in previous
courses found Coggle to be user-friendly, but you can use any mindmap software. You can even use Jamboard to design a mind map.

Review the news story that you chose to complete the topic exploration graphic organizer for Project 1 and complete the following:
Explain the article in your own words, providing a brief summary.
Why did you select this news story for scientific and personal study? In other words, what was it about the news story that interested you or made you curious?
When responding to your peers’ posts, consider the following: Is their reasoning clear? Does it make sense to you? Where might there similarly be room for interpretation in your own post, and how might you clarify? Your review of your peers’ posts will help inform your approach to your Project 2: Question Development Worksheet submission.
As you complete this assignment, note that your answers to these questions or closely related questions will be part of your Project 2: Question Development Worksheet submission, which is due at the end of Module Four. It is recommended that, in addition to entering the answers to the questions below, you save your answers in a Word document that you can refer to later when completing Project 2.
