    Assignment One: shared one file textbook : Social Development

  1. Identify and summarize the information from the assigned readings regarding theories of social development.
  2. Critically analyze the information in the context of social and emotional development
  3. Illustrate how the information you have summarized and analyzed regarding theories of social development can be applied to social and emotional developmental processes in the context of families, schools, or public policies.

Meets Module-Learning Objectives:

  • MLO5: Analyze social and emotional development theories, perspectives, and processes. (CLO6)
  • MLO6: Write about how developmental theories and perspectives can be applied to explain social and emotional developmental processes in the family, school, and policy context. (CLO6)

The Thematic Analysis Report consists of two major parts:

  1. Summary
  2. Analysis/Application

Tasks

  1. Create a chart like the Sample Chart below after reviewing the theories of social development in Chapter 1 of the textbook.
  2. Fill in the chart with the appropriate information.
  3. Write a 12-page report in Q&A format. Your written report must include the following two parts:

Part 1: Summary

  • Identify and list the theory you have selected.
  • Describe the theory and its postulates (e.g., What is the theory telling us about social and emotional development?) in 3-5 sentences.

Part 2: Analysis and Application

  • Identify a specific process involved in social and emotional development (e.g., identity, self-esteem, self-efficacy, peer interaction, aggression, prosocial behavior, etc.).
  • Apply the theory to the specific process you have identified by analyzing how the theory can help explain this process in social and emotional development in a social context (family, school, policy). Illustrate your point by providing relevant examples from the readings.

Here are examples. How would you apply the cognitive social-learning theory to explain how students may increase prosocial behavior (positive social action) in peer interactions within the classroom? Or how could Erikson’s psychosocial development theory be applied to understand and explain how people develop their identity (or sense of who they are)?

  • Submit your thematic analysis report in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file on Canvas on the due date. Click Submit Assignment in the upper right to choose the upload type for your assignment, then click Submit Assignment to complete the submission.

Sample Chart

State the theme of your analysis as a question (e.g., How can cognitive, social learning theory be applied to increase prosocial behavior (or positive social action) in peer interactions in the classroom?)

Identify. List your selected theory/perspective and its postulates and cite the theorists.

Summarize. Describe the chosen theory/perspective and its postulates.

Analyze. Point out how the selected theory/perspective can be applied to explain a specific social and emotional development process in the context of families, schools, or policies.

Criteria for Success

You are expected to complete a chart and write a written report (no more than two pages)
