Choose the town in which you assume you will likely reside during your profession. Research the community resources available in this town. If you live in a rural community, be aware of your community resources, as well as those of the nearest city to assist those who need more than the small town can provide. (I plan to reside in Oklahoma City)
Each resource will provide contact information (i.e., phone number, location, website, etc.), as well as a descriiption of what services are offered.
Provide, at minimum, the resources listed below. Be creative and add any additional resources that are specific to the needs or strengths of your personal community. If your community does not offer one of the resources below, look beyond your community to determine where your clients could have their needs met.
Local Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Agency/Shelter
Homeless Shelter
Two Substance Abuse resources
Crisis Hotlines for the following (these can be national or local crisis hotlines):
Domestic Violence
Sexual Assault
Suicide
Substance Abuse
Child Abuse/Elderly Abuse (You are legally and ethically responsible for reporting child and elderly abuse that you hear about or witness with a client. Take a few moments to become familiar with this process.)
Teen Hotline (i.e., for runaways or for those experiencing abuse, substance abuse, etc.).
Food Banks or food assistance programs
Housing Assistance
Financial Assistance
