CJA 4220: Community Relations and Critical Issues

Read Chapter #3. We have learned the value of receiving input from the community. We have also seen that there are internal communities, external communities, and overlapping communities. Consider the ways that policing, and the world for that matter, has changed since many aspects of community policing were most recently implemented. In other words, most agencies are likely continuing to implement communication techniques that were effective in the 1980’s.

Now, imagine that you are Chief of Police at a local agency. You want to develop ways that the Community (internal & external) can contribute (input) ideas and feedback and ways for your department to communicate back with the community. Keep in mind that you need to meet the needs of a diverse community (e.g., racially, technologically, etc.) and may need to have various methods to meet the feedback/input needs of your community. Try to think of new an innovative ways to meet this need. While I expect some of your ideas to be traditional (e.g., news letters), what are new way/methods (e.g., Facebook) that departments can use?

List six (6) methods you would implement in your department to encourage feedback/input in the community. In several sentences explain why you will use these and how one or more of them is innovative
