CLASSICAL SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY SOC 201H Winter 2018
Essay Topic
Assignment: Karl Marx developed his materialist conception of history and views on
Capitalism more than a century ago. Many contemporary scholars have argued that Marx’s
theories and concepts have lost much of their validity and explanatory power in recent decades,
owing to the great changes that have occurred in the World generally, and more specifically in
the ways that Capitalism has developed since he wrote Das Kapital.
Drawing upon the key concepts and theoretical claims of Marx – as presented in our Readings
and Lectures – identify the basic realities of the Capitalist mode of production as it
operates today – in Canada and globally – and discuss what you perceive to be the
strengths and/or weaknesses of Marxist theory for understanding our present realities.
For research material, you should probably obtain the following: (1) relevant statistics on the
Canadian and the Global economies, studies on wealth and property distributions, employment
sector trends, etc.; (2) academic studies on economic changes over the last few decades and/or
annual business reports, such as Credit Suisse Research Institute’s Global Wealth Report, or
World Bank, United Nations, IMF, or Oxfam publications. Websites such as
http://www.theglobaleconomy.com/ ; https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/ ; Who Rules
America Now? http://www2.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/ or similar sites could also prove helpful.
PAGE LENGTH: Approximately 12 to 1500 words in length (= 30% of course mark)
DUE DATE: Week 11, March 27.
Policy on Extension Requests: Extensions for completing assignments can only be given in
accordance with University rules, which are limited to medical situations or family emergencies.
Documentation will be required to establish compliance, as specified on the course syllabus.
NOTE: Late papers without such documentation will not be accepted, and scored as ‘0’ pts.
