Appropriate sources,
APA format, and
error free
APA format is followed
accurately. Citations are
primary source research
studies published in
professional journals.
Additional supporting
materials, such as
scholarly, peer-reviewed
articles (theoretical or
conceptual pieces), books
from academic presses,
and government and
technical reports are
included. In-text citations
are aligned with the
reference list. Writing is
error free.
Accuracy of APA is
inconsistent. Citations are
from an imbalance of
primary source research
studies published in
professional journals,
books from academic
presses, and government
and technical reports,
supporting or secondary
materials, and/or nonscholarly
sources. There
is misalignment between
in-text citations and those
in the reference list.
There are some (under
10) grammatical and/or
mechanical errors in the
writing.
APA format is inaccurate or
missing. There are fewer
peer-reviewed, primary
source research studies.
Supporting materials and/or
non-scholarly materials
predominate. In-text
citations are not aligned
with the reference list.
There are many (10 or
more) grammatical and/or
mechanical errors in the
writing.
Part 2: Research
CRITERIA PROFICIENT DEVELOPING UNACCEPTABLE
Introducing the
Idea:
Problem Statement
The topic is introduced by
providing background to the
literature review, the problem
statement, and its significance.
The issue is emerging.
Introductory background
information, a clear
problem statement,
challenge, topic and/or
significance is/are missing.
Neither implicit nor
explicit reference is made
to the topic that is to be
examined.
Body: Flow of the
Literature Review
The literature review
progresses from general ideas
to specific conclusions with an
organizational structure of
subtopics and themes.
Transitions tie sections as well
as adjacent paragraphs
together. The writing is
presented in an academic and
professional voice that
critically analyzes and
synthesizes the literature. The
review is presented as an
integrated narrative discussion,
not a list of annotations or
findings.
There is a basic flow from
one section to the next.
However, sections or
paragraphs do not
transition well or are not
clearly connected to the
problem, challenge, or
topic being discussed and
subheadings are not used.
Not all of the writing is
presented in an academic
or professional voice.
Critical analysis,
synthesis, and the
narrative are still
developing.
The literature review
lacks consistent direction.
Subtopics or themes are
disjointed. The writing is
not presented in an
academic or professional
voice, and does not
employ critical analysis
or synthesis of the
material reviewed. The
review is not a narrative
discussion.
Coverage of
Content
The content is covered in
depth without being redundant.
Sources are scholarly and
peer-reviewed, and include
seminal, timely, and relevant
content in relation to the
problem, challenge, or topic.
Significance to the purpose of
the review is clear.
The content is not covered
in depth or with
specificity.
Some sources are
scholarly and peerreviewed,
and include
seminal, timely, and
relevant content in relation
to the problem, challenge,
or topic. Significance to
the purpose of the review
is emerging.
The content is
incomplete. The material
presented is insufficient,
fragmented, and/or major
themes have not been
included. Very few of the
sources are scholarly or
peer-reviewed, or include
seminal, timely, and
relevant content in
relation to the problem,
challenge, or topic.
Content is of minimal
significance to the
purpose of the review.
Conclusion: A
Synthesis and
Analysis of Ideas
The literature review critically
examines the problem,
challenge, or topic. Gaps in the
literature are identified,
insights are appropriate, and
conclusions are succinctly and
precisely presented.
Conclusions and the guiding
question are strongly
supported in the review.
The literature review
provides minimal or
superficial examination of
the problem, challenge, or
topic. Gaps in the
literature are minimally
identified. Insights, if
provided, may not be
supported. Conclusions
and the guiding question
are emerging.
The literature review does
not provide an
examination of the
problem, challenge, or
topic. Gaps in the
literature are not
identified. Insights are
not provided or
supported. Conclusions
and the guiding question
are not supported.
Clarity of Writing
and Writing
Technique
Writing is clear, coherent, and
cohesive. The ideas are
expressed in third person in a
succinct and precise manner.
Active voice is used when
appropriate, and meaning is
explicit. The review is free of
grammatical and mechanical
errors.
Writing is generally clear,
coherent, and cohesive;
however, consistency and
precision are lacking.
The ideas expressed may
be unclear or redundant.
Active voice may or may
not be appropriate, and
meaning is not made
explicit. The review
contains minor
grammatical and/or
mechanical errors.
Writing is not clear,
coherent, or cohesive;
consistency and precision
are lacking. The ideas
expressed are unclear
and/or redundant. Active
voice is not appropriate,
and meaning is not
explicit. The review
contains major
grammatical and/or
mechanical errors. Major
reconstruction of the
argument and narrative
are required.
Appropriate
Sources, and Proper
APA Format
Review contains a minimum
of 10 scholarly, peer-reviewed,
primary source research
studies published in a variety
of professional journals.
Additional supporting
materials, such as scholarly,
peer-reviewed articles
(theoretical or conceptual
pieces), books from academic
presses, and government and
technical reports are included.
In-text citations are aligned
with the reference list. APA
format is followed accurately.
Review contains less than
10 scholarly, peerreviewed,
primary source
research studies published
in a variety of professional
journals. The review
contains an imbalance of
supporting or secondary
materials and/or nonscholarly
sources along
with primary, scholarly
research. There is
misalignment between intext
citations and those in
the reference list. APA
format is followed, but
inconsistently.
Review contains less than
six scholarly, peerreviewed,
primary source
research studies.
Supporting materials
and/or non-scholarly
materials predominate.
In-text citations are not
aligned with the reference
list. APA format is not
followed.

Comprehensive Exam Questions
Sports Leadership
Instructions
Your responses to each section are limited to 15 pages each, not including references. There are
two sections to the comprehensive exam. Part 1: Sports Leadership Specialization; Part 2:
Research. In your response to each section, please include the comprehensive exam question at
the top of the page, your response, and a reference list for your response. Thus, there will be two
separate reference lists following your response to each section. Submit one document as your
comprehensive exam. Page numbers are required for the total document. Do not include your
name in the running head. The comprehensive examination must be submitted as a Word
document.
Part 1. Sports Leadership – Read carefully and respond to each item in the scenario.
Remember to support your presentation and discussion with specific examples as well as
citations from the scholarly leadership and organizational literature. Use current and relevant
research as well as readings from course work. Use accurate APA format and style throughout
your presentation. Provide a complete and accurate (i.e., APA) list of references as a separate
page(s) at the conclusion of your response.
Leaders in the sport industry currently face numerous critical challenges. The quality and
effectiveness of leadership and the management of these challenges may well determine the
professional future sustainability and reputation of sport organizations.
Sports have grown into a powerful entertainment industry and national and international business
enterprise. The growth of sports as an entertainment industry and national and international
business enterprise is accompanied by diverse organizational and leadership challenges. Some of
the major challenges are listed below:
 Implementing effective and ethical leadership practices;
 Differing structural, political, human resource, and symbolic frameworks of various sport
organizations;
 Increasing globalization and cultural diversity;
 Monitoring corporate social and environmental responsibility as well as sustainability;
 Marketing, promotions, branding, and customer/fan satisfaction; and
 Using effective information technology and social media.
Comprehensive Examination Leadership Focus: In light of these challenges, you are to
1. Identify one (1) national or internationally sanctioned sport organization, e.g.,
NCCA, NAIA, AAU, US Olympic Committee, USSF, FIFA, etc.
2. Research, identify, and summarize the following:
2
 The organization’s mission, vision, and core values;
 The organization’s structure in terms of leadership, administration, stakeholders, goals
and objectives;
 Two (2) important organizational and leadership challenges that the organization
currently faces; and
 Conceptualize each challenge as the potential leader (see below).
3. Place yourself in the position of the President and/or Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
of the organization. Present your discussion of each organizational and leadership
challenge (identified above) separately.
For each of the two (2) identified organizational and/or leadership challenges discuss the
following:
1. As the sport leader, what is your overall organizational strategy to address the
challenge confronting the organization?
1a) What is the rationale for your strategy?
1b) What are your intended or projected organizational outcomes/goals?
2. How will you sustain the mission, vision, and core values of the organization during time
of change and transition?
3. Identify your strategic action plan to address this leadership challenge? What specific
action steps would you take? What is your plan for change? Who would you involve?
Why?
4. How will you ensure sustainability and growth for your sport organization?
Support your discussion with specific examples as well as citations from the scholarly
leadership and sport literature. Use current and relevant research as well as readings from
course texts. Use accurate APA format and style throughout your discussion. Provide a
complete and accurate (i.e., APA) list of references as a separate page or pages at the
conclusion of your response.
Part 2: Research
Conduct a literature review of at least 10 current research studies focused on a specific topic in
your field of study: sports leadership.
All resource materials must be from scholarly, empirically based, peer reviewed sources that
involve actual research studies related to your topic of interest. This review must offer a
scholarly dialogue not simply a summary or list of what has been done on the topic.
Synthesize common threads in the existing research related to your topic of choice. Identify
patterns in the literature, as well as offer critique of that literature. Be certain to identify gaps in
3
knowledge, any conflicts in findings, approaches and/or methodologies commonly used by prior
researchers, and how a study of this issue will offer additional scholarship on the topic
(especially in relationship to your organization).
You must limit your review to no more than 15 pages.
