Tutorial Presentation and Paper 1000 words

Worth of total mark of 20%

REQUIREMENTS & ADVICE

TOPIC QUESTION: How do excuses differ from justifications?  Is being a battered woman a legitimate defence (excuse) for murder under the guise of either self-defence or provocation? Are concerns about enlarging the traditional definition of self-defence (or provocation) well founded? READINGS: Giovanni Pacino & Ors v The Queen & Anor [1998]; R v Pacino.* Extending the limits of criminal negligence; R v Richard & Gregory *[1998] Finkelstein, Responsibility for unintended consequences;*

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO..

  • Create a power point
  • Have a 1000 words based on power point (a speech)

  • Reading material related to relevant tutorial questions is necessary preparation for your presentation, but you can go beyond that to material also listed under an essay topic in your chosen area, if you can use it effectively in the limited time and format requirements.

  • Be prepared to lead tutorial for 25-30 minutes – using a Powerpoint presentation.  Try to focus on aspects or applications of the topic that will arouse interest and discussion.  Include questions/comments/invitations to discussion inserted as you go, or kept until the end.  Make sure you motivate discussion by taking an interested position yourself or thinking up examples or problems. Do not just ask ‘cold’ questions like “What do you think?”

  • Bring enough copies of a Handout or send file to Course Coordinator in advance for printing handouts for the group. The handout can consist of one page (or two) which can be double sided if you wish – can be power-point format or dot points. There should be 6 slides to a page.  Identify on the handout the key concepts, arguments or ideas you have chosen to focus on – summarise your analysis and conclusions.   Make sure your name, level, tutorial time, and presentation topic are all clearly shown on the handout.  Include references on the handout.

  • You will have three weeks after giving your verbal presentation to upload a polished written (prose) version of your presentation of around 1000 words. (If you go a little over it won’t matter.)  Marked presentations will not be returned until after written-up versions have been submitted.

  • Marks will be based on: clarity and pertinence of presentation content with respect to arguments/issues/central concepts; critical analysis and evaluation of ideas; and interest and originality of presentation.  Content will be more important than style but the latter can be effective in communicating ideas.
