Criminology, Exam # 2

Please answer BOTH questions. Answer all parts of the questions. Bring your answers to class on Monday, March 26th. Make sure the essays are stapled, and that your name is on them. Each essay is worth 50 points. Please see the rubric to note how the essays will be assessed. There is no length requirement. Just answer the questions thoroughly and accurately. Each essay could be between 600-900 words. This word range is not a mandate, merely a guideline. All exam grades will be final. I am happy to explain them, but I do not negotiate them.

  1. “Toward a Marxian Theory of Deviance” makes the case for the relationship between capitalism and the production of deviant and criminal categories. Spitzer delineates specific conditions under which a person or group will be deviantized or criminalized (this is the first list in the article). Please list and explain these five conditions. Next, identify two critiques of Spitzer’s perspective.

  1. Compare and contrast our piece on feminist criminology (Chesney Lind’s work) with one of our ecology articles—Broken Windows OR Deviant Places. Name one thing that makes these perspectives different. Perhaps less obviously, name two things that make them similar or compatible. Lastly, identify one underlying assumption that each of the authors make about social life.
