For this option, you are to analyze a cultural artifact or product (e.g., a film, television program, work of art, performance, news story, policy document, etc.) with a view to establishing how it represents or can be interpreted in terms of the issues, concepts, or frameworks
CHYS 3P35 Grading Template for Paper
Criterion Weight
Proper length, style, and format of presentation
• Paper has a scholarly rather than informal (conversational, colloquial) tone (despite possible
inclusion of relevant personal experiences—use of “I” is ok!)
• Clarity of expression, mechanics of word choice
• Grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes/typos (proofread!) should not compromise overall
flow or clarity
• Paper includes an informative (rather than a generic) title
• Pages are numbered, starting at main text
• Paper meets limit of 8-10 pages (no less than 8 pages, but also no more than 11 pages, not
including title page or reference list), double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins
• Citing, quoting, and referencing sources: In-text citations are correct and consistent; quotation
(used sparingly and strategically, if at all) is accurate, with page numbers of quoted material cited;
reference list is structured correctly and follows APA guidelines
/20
Proper use and relevance of research
• Paper relates to a topic or issue covered in class or broadly related to inclusion, community, and
developmental disabilities
• Paper topic not too vague or generic (aim for specificity of focus if possible)
• Locates appropriate academic literature
• Draws on the required number of academic sources (at least 5 scholarly sources, at least one of
which must be an assigned course reading)
• Does not rely heavily on generic, secondary texts
/20
Structure and organization
• Logical development of ideas within and across paragraphs (ease of understanding)
• Strategic use of headings (e.g., to identify pertinent themes, reasons, subtopics, or issues)
• Introduction (approximately a page or two) provides context for the paper (e.g., establishes
importance of topic), includes clear statement of thesis or position, provides brief itinerary of issues
to be addressed in body of paper
• Conclusion (approximately a page) leaves reader with main points captured in the paper or “takehome
message,” possible implications, and/or unresolved issues, etc. (use your judgment here)
/30
Level of analysis and substantive adequacy
• Integrates scholarly literature (empirical and/or theoretical) and, if appropriate, policy,
biographical/autobiographical, and/or related literature
• Displays good knowledge of the topic (e.g., via identification of pertinent themes, reasons, use of
literature/concepts to support interpretations, etc.)
• Claims are supported, where possible, with reasons and evidence (e.g., material from sources,
personal experience, etc.)
• Considers a possible objection(s) to the argument or interpretation presented in the paper, as well
as a response to that objection
• Evidence of independent thinking about the topic, choice of focus, approach, etc.
• Argument is logical, easy to follow, persuasive
