Writing a critical review • The review should follow the conventions of writing an essay with an introduction, main body and a conclusion. Please do not use headings for these sections. This is not a business report. • The body should contain a short summary of the article in question and a critique of it. • Your review should be an argument with a thesis that expresses your judgment of the article. • Support any statements you make, including your opinions, withevidence, explanations and examples. • A few well-chosen quotations can convey the ‘flavour’ of the author’s style as well as illustrating a point. • Read the chosen article, consider propositions, take a perspective and then find other articles etc. • You also need to read other materials listed in the first few weeks of this unit before embarking on your review. The purpose of reading other materials is so that you understand that there is more than one perspective.• We use the critical review essay to give you the opportunity to read one piece of writing thoroughly, and to enable you to understand that most opinions expressed in the reading materials are contested. You should develop a hypothesis and support your opinion by other refereed opinions. Your conclusion, therefore, should draw together these threads and, on balance, the argument you put forward should favour your perspective.
