Culture Essay Prompt and Information
Prompt:
Use the three stories to develop and support an argument focusing on one or more of the cultural concept terms.
Further Explanation
Develop and support an argument or position on one or more of the culture concepts using the three readings we have studied so far (“The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”, “Marriage is a Private Affair”, and “The Garden of Stubborn Cats”). Your thesis must focus on one or more of the concepts we have applied. The development of your thesis can focus primarily on one text, but it must involve all three. Develop a thesis statement that will direct an argument concerning at least one of the cultural concepts we have worked with in the context of the three texts we have read.
A thesis is a debatable statement that establishes the direction or purpose of your argument.
A thesis statement is the single most important sentence of your argument. Your entire essay can be reduced to your thesis statement. Every sentence of your essay exists only to support, explore, and develop your thesis. Every paragraph of your essay presents, explains, and develops an idea that is meaningfully connected to your thesis.
If a sentence or paragraph is not meaningfully connected to your thesis, then it does not belong in your essay. These connections need to be clear, but they should also be creative and critical. Most of the work in our writing is developing the connections between our many ideas and our thesis statement.
The thesis creates a room and everything in your essay must fit into that room. If something does not fit in the room your thesis creates, it will awkwardly hang out a window or tumble out of the door. You need to construct your room carefully; in other words, the wording of your thesis will determine the type and size of the room. Then, of course, the type and size of your room will determine what can fit inside. The room created by your thesis should be worth visiting for your reader. Let me be clear that within this extended metaphor “the room” is your argument, and your argument is the purpose for your essay.
Your thesis needs to be clear. It also needs to be worth developing. Finally, it needs to take a position that is arguable. The thesis statement directs and determines what you need to prove, explain, explore, develop, and connect throughout your essay. AN ESSAY IS AN EXPANDED THESIS.
Your thesis statement needs to address culture using the three readings we have studied so far (“The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”, “Marriage is a Private Affair”, and “The Garden of Stubborn Cats”). Your thesis must focus on one or more of the concepts from the Cultural Concept Lists I-III. You can develop your thesis by primarily focusing on one text, but your essay must involve all three readings at some point.
