Topic: Current Issue – Statement of the Problem
You are asked to create a problem statement. Keep in mind that a problem statement is not the identification of a traditional problem. Instead, it is the identification of what has not been studied, not been studied enough, or an area that has drawn tension (findings are not in agreement) in the literature that requires additional study to inform decision-making and/or practice. Be sure to thoroughly read through the literature [peer reviewed research published in the last five years] to compare what has been studied, to identify a nuance, gap, or tension that requires additional study.
In construct your problem statement, start out describing what has been studied (complete with recently published research citations), and then segue into what hasn’t been studied, or hasn’t been studied enough. Consider using one of the following lead-ins to state the problem:

      • It is not known…
      • It is not known how and to what extent…
      • Absent from the literature…
      • The literature is lacking…
      • Very little research has been conducted in exploring…
      • ___has not been studied extensively in the literature

In starting out, you might elect to create a comparison matrix of articles, and once you identify alignments, gaps, and tensions, then begin identifying themes, and writing out your comparison of articles within those themes in narrative format.
After completing the Reading & Study for this module/week, condense your Current Issue Project: Essay down into a Statement of the Problem identifying and explaining the essence of the issue. Synthesize your problem into a coherent argument for your study using at least 400 words, identifying and explaining the nuances of the problem (i.e., related issues). This is your opportunity to concisely identify the persons, places, things, and/or ideas pertinent to the issue. Keep in mind that there may be one or more inter-related issues examined. Be sure to also explain the relevance of the problem to the field of higher education. Post your Statement of the Problem in the discussion board with your topic as the title, and conclude the post by explaining how you might investigate the topic either quantitatively or qualitatively (Only choose 1 method)
Statement of the Problem Template: Please carefully follow the template.
In 300–400 words (1 focused paragraph), convince the reader why the particular issue or problem you are interested in needs further investigation. Include a minimum of 5 recent (less than 5 years old) citations demonstrating that the problem is current and derived from a review of the literature on the topic.
Use the following outline to structure your paragraph:
Identify the general topic needing more research, including relevant/recent statistics on the issue.

  • Summarize the recent research on the topic.
  • Explain how/why the current research is deficient or falls short.
  • Conclude with a focused statement articulating the problem in relation to your proposed research design.
  • Writing format must follow 6th edition APA format.
