Formal Analysis (1-2 pages): First, you will begin with a strictly formal analysis
of the artwork, drawing upon the language of art history to examine the artwork’s formal
qualities. This exercise is intended to promote a deep engagement with the visual
characteristics of an artwork and to introduce you to the methods and style of art historical
writing.
