Discuss a problem or opportunity at your workplace that would be amenable to an experimental research design. The problem or opportunity would be measured at the ordinal or ratio level of measurement. Some examples follow:
A supervisor wonders if her team has a problem with absenteeism. She wants to compare the average number of days absent per worker to other teams with similar job duties. The number of days that workers are absent is measured at the ratio level of measurement.
A department head is concerned about the public perception of the services provided by his group. He wants to send out a customer satisfaction survey to a random group of city residents who have contacted his department. The customer satisfaction survey has Likert scale questions (ratings from 1 to 5) on a variety of statements that relate to service satisfaction, with rankings from Very Dissatisfied (1) to Very Satisfied (5) with rankings of Somewhat Dissatisfied (2), Neither Dissatisfied nor Satisfied (3), and Somewhat Satisfied (4) in between. This preference scale is measured at the ordinal level of measurement.
Please refer to the two examples shown above. Based on what you have learned in class thus far, please click on the “Week One Learning Activity 1” link above and create a forum thread in which you identify an opportunity or problem that would be measured at the ordinal or ratio level of measurement.
