Discussion 1: Is information technology ethical, equitable, and efficient?

As we discuss in Parts I and II, many Internet-based technologies have emerged in the last three decades very quickly. They have become widespread, even though we have possibly not fully acculturated to them. The early indication was the generational divides in SMS language (LOL, OMG, BRB, … and the whole family of acronyms have become common parlance). Technologies like Sunpass faced some initial resistance, but have now become commonplace. RFID chips were considered as the mark of the beast or the devil. More recently, generative AI, body-worn cameras, facial recognition systems are looked upon with immense suspicion. The common argument for adopting these technologies is that they make us more efficient and organizationally productive. Naysayers argue that the technologies reinforce current power structures, which are subject to unethical use by the big brother, and increase the digital and wealth divide. Generative AI may not be inclusive and systematically biased. Which side of the argument do you fall on? Make a cogent argument one way or the other, and respond to other’s comments. Keep the discussion civil and professional.
