Discussion: When Does Elder Care Become Abuse or Neglect?

Often, family members, especially adult children, have the responsibility of determining when an elderly person may need additional care and what type of care may be needed. These decisions are often made with little guidance and in the face of great resistance from the elderly themselves. Forensic psychology professionals who work in adult protective services or other court-related agencies are frequently called to investigate alleged cases of elder abuse or neglect and to recommend services and interventions for the family.

In this Discussion, you analyze a case scenario that involves potential elder abuse or neglect and determine how to proceed with the family based on your local statutes and scholarly references.

Post a response to the following:

Explain statutes within your state or country that pertain to elder abuse and neglect. Discuss whether the situation in the scenario would meet legal criteria for elder abuse or neglect in your jurisdiction. How would you, as a forensic psychology professional, proceed in this case? Identify additional information that you might need to gather and how you would do so. List your recommendations for the family. Cite appropriate scholarly sources, as needed.
