Ribeiro et al. (2022) define Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) as a multifactor disorder that causes impairment in social behavior, language, and communication and by individualized and repetitive interests and activities. Ribeiro et al. (2022) further explain that the prevalence of ASD reveals its severity, and diagnosis should happen as early as possible, as early intervention can result in successful outcomes.
My potential topic involves children and adolescents diagnosed with ASD. I currently work as a registered behavior technician for children and adolescents diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder. My job involves teaching and working with such kids to help them develop and maintain crucial social, communication, cognitive, adaptive, executive function, and motor skills. My job also involves decreasing and eliminating dysfunctional or maladaptive behaviors. That said, I am interested in this topic because of my experience working with kids diagnosed with ASD and their families and because of how fast it seems the field is growing.
Jenkins (2023) conducted a generic qualitative research study that allowed LPCs and state-certified school counselors to explain how they utilize play therapy to build trust and rapport with children diagnosed with ASD. To add to this research, I am interested in the effects of play and applied behavior therapy combined for children diagnosed with ASD related to faster success rates. Jenkins (2023) points out that play therapy significantly benefits children diagnosed with ASD as they can obtain many skills from such. It seems that ASD is a challenge for everyone involved, so the importance of this topic is to support further, educate, and advocate for the better.
