1. Briefly summarize the origins of government and then explain the principles and difference between a positive and negative view of government.  What political ideologies support the different perspectives?  Provide current examples for how we see the two opposing views of government supported by the Republican and Democratic parties.
2.Identify and explain the different versions of federalism and how they evolved over time.  What events helped spur the expansion of goverment power at the national level?  How do different ideologies react to the expansion or contraction of federal power and intervention at the state level?  Finally, select two topics and show how different levels of government regulate or legislate those issues and whether they have been effective in doing so.
3.Provide an overview of the different elements of Social Movement Theory and how it helps explain why some civil rights movements have been successful while others have struggled.  Select one movement from the last 20 years and examine how it fit within the different criteria of Social Movement Theory and whether that explained its eventual success or failure.  In your opinion, what are the most important elements of that allow some movements to be successful.
